The inaugural Island 2 Bays Challenge is the brainchild of Rob Peters and Shaun Lilford – a Robben Island Crossing, followed by a run from Big Bay to Hout Bay.

The Challenge is being done in aid of the Philippi’s Children Centre, in an effort to raise money to help fund the school and ease the pressure on the already limited resources available to both the school and the surrounding community.

Few things are more important than nutrition and an education and every kid in South Africa should have the opportunity for both. It is our hope that our efforts will raise funds for the school and highlight the amazing work being done by the staff there. The funds will go to fees, meals, and transport to and from the school.

PHILIPPI CHILDREN'S CENTER

Started in 1991, Philippi Children’s Centre is a semi-rural, Montessori school for disadvantaged children in the Philippi agricultural area. Servicing 260 children, it provides Montessori quality education at one-tenth of the price available in big cities. Our objective is to have preschool children who can read, write and do basic mathematics before they enter grade 1. We also have a heated indoor swimming pool on the property for water safety and swimming lessons.

WHAT'S IT GOING TO TAKE?

We will start our Challenge with a 7.4km swim from Robben Island to Big Bay. The Atlantic Ocean will be between 12-17 degrees Celsius for the 3-hour swim

We will follow that up with an Ultra Marathon as we take to the road and run from Big Bay to Hout Bay. A Beautiful 53km run along the coast passing the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay and running below the iconic Table Mountain, Lions Head and 12 Apostles
